The Major League Soccer was founded in February 1995 as an independent organization. Before that, there were several other attempts to establish professional football. When the USA applied for the 1994 World Cup, FIFA stipulated that there had to be a regular professional football league. Then the Major League Professional Soccer was founded in 1993, which then merged into the MLS (Major League Soccer). But it wasn't until 1996 that the MLS started with 10 teams. Unfortunately, the league wasn't very successful.
It was not until 2002, when the World Cup was taking place, that interest in the Major League Soccer League was rekindled. Reaching the quarter-finals of the US national soccer team drove the popularity even further. The final of the MLS Cup 2002 reached a new record with 61,316 spectators at Gillette Stadium. Football was gaining popularity again in the United States. By signing David Beckham, the US Soccer League was able to achieve a higher national and international popularity. Later international players like Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Juan Pablo Ángel and Freddie Ljungberg also contributed to it.
On September 8, 2014, the new MLS logo was presented, which has graced the league from the 2015 season. This heralded the age of MLS Next.
Today a total of 27 teams (franchise) play in Major League Soccer. 24 of them come from the USA; the other three from the largest Canadian metropolitan regions around Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver directly on the border with the USA. The National Champion 2020 is Columbus Crew. The MLS is to be expanded to 30 teams by 2023.
